What is Phenoxyethanol

As a germicidal Phenoxyethanol have several uses. There are several cosmetic products which are made up of this compound. Some of them are listed as below:

  • Eyeliner
  • Soap
  • Baby lotions and wipes

Due to its germicidal properties, it is often used in cosmetic products to make sure that the bacterial growth is limited. It is also used in soaps and perfumes as stabilizers. Studies in this regard have shown that only 25% of the cosmetic products have Phenoxyethanol concentration less than 0.4. It shows the high usage of Phenoxyethanol and therefore also shows its importance. However, the purest form of Phenoxyethanol is not health friendly. It can cause severe allergic reactions such as eczema. The cosmetic products using this compound might not suit some of the users. It is therefore advised to consult the physician first of all before making a decision in this regard. In the past FDA has banned several cosmetic products due to allergic reactions. Only that part of the skin is affected where Phenoxyethanol is applied.

The nervous system can also be affected by Phenoxyethanol and therefore it is also advised not to get products if you have a history of nervous disorders. It can also cause depression and therefore it has been associated to several central nervous system issues. Mothers’ breastfeeding their infants should also not use the products made up of Phenoxyethanol. It can cause vomiting and diarrhea and can be fatal to health and therefore it should be avoided. Other than health concerns this compound is really useful and beneficial.
