What is Vitamin C

Vitamin C is found in food and dietary supplement. It is also found in its purest form as ascorbic acid and is used to treat several health concerns. The only drawback of Vitamin C is that it is not fat soluble which means that the extra amount of Vitamin C is always excreted out of the body. It is used to get rid of common cold and can be injected and taken orally. There are no significant issues if high dosage of Vitamin C is taken. Some common issues caused are:

  • Headache
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Flushing from skin

It was first discovered in 1912, the scientists then isolated it in 1928. The first commercial making of Vitamin C was done in 1933. It is regarded as safe medicine by FDA and World Health Organization has also included it in the list of essential medicines. The cost of Vitamin C is also very low and over the counter price was $0.007 per tablet in 2015-16. It is also added by numerous people from all over the world as breakfast ingredient such as cereal. Some medical uses are as follows:

  • The destabilization of collagen can be treated well if Vitamin C is taken adequately. Though it is not common but still it could be treated if vitamin C is taken adequately.
  • A meta-analysis done in 2014 shows that the adequate intake of Vitamin C can lead to prevention of lung cancer. The cancerous cell growth is not only limited but a combination of medicines with Vitamin C can also lead to complete cure at early stages.
